Monday - Manly Beach

did the northern suburb of Manly and its beaches. highlight of the trip so far. finally got a hot day - convertable pants into shorts worked great. did a 3 hour walk around the coastline including a hike up a small mountain in Sydney national park to this amazing semi-hidden lookout with views of all of Manley and the ocean. it was great- had most of the walk to myself - as everyone seemed to take the opposite route or just stay at the main beach. I much prefered this area to Bondi.

eventually I arrived at this little cove and beach and had it all to myself and wished i had a copy of Alex Garlands "the beach" with me. then i couldn't figure out how to get out - the guide said look for stone stairs at the right end of the beach. unfortunatly because it was a cove it was surrounded by rock and stone. tense moments but eventually success! there were signs that this was part of a "little penguin" habitat or something. little bastards must have been hiding. pictures soon. on the walk down there were signs that said "endangered wombat" area next 2 km. so i kept a look out for these elusive creatures but they were obviously in kahoots with the pinguins.

Monday Night Football - yes thats what they call it. nationally televised game - all the bells and whistles of going to an NFL game. clearly they've hired some ex-NFL producers - big inflatable mascots, smoke machines, cheerleaders (who i looked at with pity and distain of course), parties outside the stadium, big crowd, food vendors outside for hotdogs etc. Sydney Roosters got stomped 36-6 to the Bulldogs - who i still don't know what city they are from- before a crowd of over 20,000. as i entered the stadium and got to my seat - it became apparent that the Bulldogs were the home team. so with much tact and skill, I slowly put away my newly purchased Roosters team ball cap and cheered on the Bulldogs to victory.
